## Plastic Pollution Challenges

Mexico City accounts for less than 1% of the country's total land area, yet it stands among the most densely populated urban centres in the world.Each year, the city generates approximately 895,000 tonnes of plastic waste—enough to fill the iconic Azteca Stadium annually. Plastics make up around 20% of all municipal waste.Given this scale, tackling plastic pollution and accelerating the shift towards a circular plastics economy by 2040 has become an urgent and critical priority.

## Mexico City Plastic Action Partnership

In 2022, the Government of Mexico City, through the Secretariat of the Environment (SEDEMA), joined the World Economic Forum’s Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP). Officially launched in 2023, the Mexico City Plastic Action Partnership (PAP-CDMX) is the first initiative of its kind in Latin America.PAP-CDMX brings together the city government, civil society, academia and the private sector to build a comprehensive state-level data foundation and design evidence-based interventions that transform commitments into tangible outcomes.As a collaborative platform, PAP-CDMX engages key stakeholders across the plastics value chain to drive coordinated and system-wide efforts towards achieving plastic circularity.

### The Mexico City Plastic Action Roadmap

The roadmap outlines a clear and ambitious strategy to boost plastic circularity from 24% in 2022 to 84% by 2040, while also achieving an 80% reduction in mismanaged plastic waste and a 26% cut in plastic-related greenhouse gas emissions.Developed through a collaborative, multi-stakeholder process, the report reflects the contributions of government, industry, recyclers, academia, and civil society.At its core are ten enabling actions designed to drive a coordinated and systemic shift toward a more sustainable and circular plastics economy.
