## Challenges and Opportunities

With more than 3,200 kilometres of coastline, marine litter is one of Colombia's most pressing environmental challenges.An estimated 65% of solid waste generated in coastal communities enters the marine environment, affecting biodiversity, ecosystems and coastal livelihoods.Recognizing the urgency of the issue, Colombia has taken important steps to reduce plastic pollution. Since 2022, the country has introduced measures to phase out selected single-use plastic products and is advancing policies and waste management solutions to accelerate the transition to a circular economy for plastics.


## The Colombia National Plastic Action Partnership

In January 2024, Colombia joined the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) and launched the Colombia National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP Colombia)—a multistakeholder platform that brings together government, business, civil society and international partners to accelerate action on plastic pollution.NPAP Colombia strengthens collaboration across sectors, builds technical capacity, connects national stakeholders with global expertise and supports the development of evidence-based solutions for a more circular plastics economy that benefits both people and nature.


### Plastic Pollution and Biodiversity in Colombia: Pathways for Environmental and Economic Resilience

This assessment identifies where plastic pollution poses the greatest risks to Colombia's biodiversity, examines the systemic drivers behind these impacts, and provides practical, evidence-based recommendations to reduce plastic pollution, protect biodiversity and strengthen environmental and economic resilience through circular economy solutions.

### Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) Assessment of the Plastics Value Chain in Colombia

This assessment examines gender equality and social inclusion across Colombia's plastics value chain, highlighting how plastic pollution disproportionately affects women, informal waste workers, rural communities and other groups facing greater barriers to participation.It also provides recommendations to help ensure the transition to a circular economy for plastics is inclusive and benefits all.
