## Colombia's Challenges

With an extensive coastline spanning over 3,200 kilometers, the prevalent issue of marine litter stands out as a prominent challenge in Colombia. Approximately 65% of solid waste generated in coastal communities finds its way into the sea, resulting in the accumulation of debris within marine and coastal ecosystems. Acknowledging the urgency of the issue, Colombia has implemented a series of various measures to combat plastic pollution. Since 2022, the nation instituted a ban on single-use plastic items, and the government has undertaken comprehensive initiatives encompassing waste management strategies towards a circular plastics economy.

## Colombia National Plastic Action Partnership

In January 2024, Colombia formally launched its collaboration with the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) to establish the Colombia National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP Colombia) — a multistakeholder platform dedicated to accelerating national action on plastic pollution. This milestone represents a significant step forward in Colombia’s efforts to address plastic waste, strengthening coordinated engagement across stakeholders and reinforcing a comprehensive, inclusive approach to solutions.NPAP Colombia convenes government, private sector and civil society actors to enhance technical capacity, unlock access to global knowledge and best practices, and drive the transition towards a circular economy that benefits both the environment and economic growth.
