## Zambia's Challenges

Plastic pollution has emerged as a pressing challenge in Zambia, echoing a global environmental crisis that demands immediate attention. With an estimated 80,000 metric tons of plastic waste generated annually in the country, only 10% of this plastic waste is collected and properly disposed of, leaving the remaining 90% to contaminate the environment. Rivers and water bodies, such as the Zambezi River, are heavily affected, with an estimated 2,400 tons of plastic waste ending up in these vital ecosystems each year. This not only threatens aquatic life but also jeopardizes the health of communities that rely on these water sources for their daily needs. Addressing plastic pollution is a challenge that calls for urgent action to preserve Zambia's natural beauty and protect the health of its people.

## Moving Forward

In September 2023, Zambia joined the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP), marking a significant milestone in the fight against plastic pollution. As part of this partnership, GPAP is committed to bolstering Zambia's technical capabilities, offering access to global expertise and collaborative networks, and facilitating the establishment of multi-stakeholder platforms. The partnership underscores Zambia's dedication to combat plastic pollution and embrace the principles of a circular plastics economy. These collaborative actions hold the potential to make a profound impact in safeguarding Zambia's invaluable water and land resources.
