Angola

Angola is advancing its efforts to minimize plastic pollution by investing in sustainable growth strategies, protecting its rivers and wetlands, and enhancing community resilience.

Challenges and Opportunities

Angola faces significant plastic pollution challenges, particularly in urban areas such as Luanda, which generates huge amount of solid waste daily, with plastic making up a substantial portion. Mismanaged plastic waste often accumulates in drainage systems, leading to severe flooding during the rainy season and causing widespread damage to communities, the economy, and vital coastal ecosystems. These issues not only threaten public health and infrastructure but also compromise Angola's efforts to protect its rich biodiversity and support sustainable development.

In response to this growing crisis, Angola is undertaking ambitious reforms aimed at promoting economic diversification and enhancing climate resilience. These efforts include exploring innovative waste management solutions, investing in green growth strategies. By addressing plastic pollution, Angola seeks to create a cleaner, more sustainable environment while advancing economic opportunities and improving the quality of life for its citizens.

Angola joins the Global Plastic Action Partnership

In January 2025, the Global Plastic Action Partnership has proudly welcomed Angola to its National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) network, marking a significant step forward in the nation’s efforts to tackle plastic pollution.

This partnership underscores Angola's strong commitment to addressing the pressing challenges posed by plastic waste, which threatens its urban centers, coastal ecosystems, and local livelihoods.

Through NPAP Angola, the country will foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including government, businesses, civil society, and local communities. This partnership will also support the nation’s broader ambition to transition towards a sustainable, circular economy by driving actions across all sectors.

NPAP Angola serves as a platform for Angola to not only address its plastic pollution crisis but also advance economic diversification, enhance climate resilience, and protect its rich biodiversity for future generations.
