At a GlancePartners: T. Rowe Price Associates; CitigroupInvestment type: Blue bondKey business benefit: Reinforced long-term business resilience through capital allocation linked to environmental stewardshipKey outcomes: $100 million blue bond issued in December 2024. Of the $67.63 million allocated, $46.14 million (68%) went to sustainable marine transport, avoiding 74,211 tCO2e per year. $9.83 million (15%) went to marine ecosystem management, conservation and restoration, including about 140 m² of reef restored across Dubai Islands. $8.80 million (13%) went to marine pollution initiatives reaching more than 12,000 beneficiaries, and $2.86 million (4%) to sustainable ports. The first Blue Bond Allocation and Impact Report follows the ICMA Harmonised Framework for Impact Reporting. The OpportunityIn 2023, DP World updated its Sustainable Finance Framework to include sustainability-linked components, becoming the first port operator to establish a combined use-of-proceeds and sustainability-linked framework. In November 2024, the framework was further refined to explicitly incorporate blue use-of-proceeds categories aligned with ICMA guidance on blue-themed bonds and the IFC Guidelines for Blue Finance. This integrated framework enables the company to finance both maritime infrastructure and projects that protect and restore marine and coastal ecosystems, positioning DP World to issue blue bonds and other thematic financing instruments for eligible investments across its global operations.Under the framework, proceeds can be allocated across four priority blue categories: sustainable ports, sustainable marine transport, marine ecosystem management, conservation and restoration, and marine pollution – each confirmed as fully eligible for blue bond financing. The ApproachIn December 2024, DP World issued a $100 million blue bond under its Sustainable Finance Framework, becoming the first blue bond issuer from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and the first global port operator to issue a blue bond.[1] The issuance provides stakeholders with clear evidence of how DP World links capital allocation with environmental stewardship in a way that reinforces long-term business resilience.DP World’s first Blue Bond Allocation and Impact Report follows the ICMA Harmonised Framework for Impact Reporting. It includes relevant impact parameters, enhancing comparability and investor decision-making.Sustainable marine transport, representing the largest share of the portfolio ($46.14 million, 68%), delivers measurable climate benefits, including 74,211 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2 e) in avoided emissions per year. Targeted investments in marine ecosystem management, conservation and restoration ($9.83 million, 15%) advance ocean health outcomes, including the restoration of approximately 140 square metres (m²) of reef area across Dubai Islands. Marine pollution initiatives ($8.80 million, 13%) contribute to improved environmental quality and community impact, reaching more than 12,000 beneficiaries, while sustainable ports ($2.86 million, 4%) supports enhanced operational efficiency and environmental performance across port infrastructure.[2]Value CreatedFor DP World, the issuance reinforces long-term business resilience and is a strong signal to stakeholders of DP World’s capital allocation linked to environmental stewardship. For climate, biodiversity, and ecosystem health outcomes, the portfolio delivers benefits to climate, biodiversity, and ecosystem health, including avoided emissions, reef restoration and broader investment in ecosystem conservation and restoration; and reduced pollution and increased port efficiency. Why It Matters / Key TakeawaysDP World’s blue bond demonstrates the opportunity for a company to directly connect long-term business resilience and environmental stewardship. As the first blue bond issuer from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and the first global port operator to issue a blue bond, DP World is a first-mover in this approach in its region and its sector.Relevant global targetsGlobal Biodiversity Framework Targets 2 (restoration), 7 (pollution reduction), 14 and 19 (mainstreaming and resource mobilization)Paris Agreement (avoided emissions)UN Sustainable Development Goals 14 (Life Below Water) and 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation)ReferencesDP World. DP World: Long-term business resilience via capital allocated to environmental stewardship
DP World
At a Glance Partners: The Kingdom of Thailand, acting through the Ministry of Finance and its Public Debt Management Office (PDMO)  Investment type: Sustainability-Linked Bond Key business benefit: Creates a replicable model for supporting governments in embedding measurable environmental targets into sovereign debt frameworks; demonstrates that biodiversity-related KPIs can be integrated into large-scale sovereign financing, potentially encouraging further market development. Key outcomes: THB25 billion raised (~US$795M); 15-year-8-month tenor; final orderbook of ~THB36.3 billion; Two KPIs for the Sustainability-Linked Bond include (1) reducing Thailand’s net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 47% by 2035 compared to 2019 levels and (2) increasing Thailand’s terrestrial and inland water protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures to 30% of total national land area by 2030. This makes Thailand the first sovereign issuer in Asia Pacific to incorporate a nature-related indicator into a Sustainability-Linked Bond. The Opportunity Thailand’s first Sustainability-Linked Bond was issued in 2024 through its Sustainability-Linked Finance Framework, supported by institutions including the Asian Development Bank and Standard Chartered, as the only international bank. This first SLB was tied to Thailand’s national climate targets focused on emissions reductions and electric vehicles. Following strong demand for Thailand's Sustainability-Linked Bond, there was an opportunity for a second issuance and the opening to embed a nature KPI into the new SLB, a first for a sovereign issuer in Asia.  The Approach Working with the Ministry of Finance & Public Debt Management Office of Thailand, Standard Chartered served as Joint Sustainability Structuring Bank, Joint Bookrunner and Joint Lead Arranger, supporting the drafting of the updated framework and leveraging its experience in nature and climate finance to advise on the KPIs and Sustainability Performance Targets (SPTs) included in the SLB. The KPIs were structured to directly support Thailand’s national goals. The KPIs for the SLB were established as (1) reducing Thailand’s net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 152 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (MtCO₂e) by 2035, representing at 47% cut compared to 2019 emissions and (2) increasing the percentage of Thailand’s terrestrial and inland water areas covered by protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) to at least 30% of the country’s total area by 2030. The transaction was supported by healthy investor demand which saw a final orderbook of THB 36.3 billion, allowing the issuer to fully utilise the greenshoe to upsize from an initial size of THB 15 billion to THB 25 billion, representing a 1.45x oversubscription. The characteristics of SLBs are designed to vary based on whether the issuer meets these KPIs and SPTs, providing incentives to achieve targeted goals. In this case, the SLB includes a symmetric financial incentive mechanism: the interest rate may increase or decrease by 2.5 basis points for each KPI, depending on whether the relevant Sustainability Performance Target is met. This SLB directly supports Thailand’s sustainable development by aligning its national debt with its long-term environmental goals. Standard Chartered supported the Kingdom’s first Sustainability framework in 2020 and through this latest issuance, continues to support its implementation. Value Created For Standard Chartered, the transaction confirms its expertise in structuring innovative sovereign finance solutions that respond to growing investor interest in climate- and nature-linked instruments. It also strengthens the bank’s positioning as a partner to governments seeking to align their financing strategies with national environmental priorities and evolving market expectations. Through this experience, Standard Chartered is well placed to support other sovereign issuers exploring similar approaches. For Thailand, the transaction demonstrates how sovereign financing can support national climate and biodiversity priorities while attracting capital from domestic and international investors. By linking the bond’s financial terms to measurable emissions-reduction and conservation targets, Thailand has strengthened accountability for its environmental commitments and created a framework that could support future sustainable finance transactions. The strong investor demand also signals market confidence in Thailand’s sustainability-linked financing approach. For climate and biodiversity outcomes, the bond links Thailand’s financing conditions to measurable progress on emissions reductions and the conservation of terrestrial and inland water areas. If achieved, these targets could contribute to stronger climate action, improved protection of natural ecosystems and progress towards Thailand’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Why It Matters / Key Takeaways Standard Chartered has created a blueprint for embedding nature and climate targets within a Sustainability-Linked Bond. Its strong investor demand may encourage other governments and financial institutions to explore similar structures for terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine conservation objectives. Relevant global targetsGlobal Biodiversity Framework Targets 3 (30x30 / area-based conservation), 14 and 19 (mainstreaming and resource mobilisation) ReferencesStandard Chartered supports Thailand’s second sustainability-linked bond, advancing climate and nature ambitionsADB Supports Asia’s First Sovereign Sustainability-Linked Bond in Thailand

Yet this expansion within heavily used marine environments demands that deployment contribute to ecosystem recovery, rather than just minimize harm. Newer projects are already moving beyond impact avoidance towards net-positive ecological and social outcomes alongside energy production. The ApproachHollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ), located 18-36 km off the Dutch coast in the North Sea, is one of the largest examples in practice. Jointly owned by Vattenfall, BASF and Allianz, it has 139 turbines and 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity, producing approximately 1.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually – enough for more than 1.5 million households. Funded by Vattenfall and operational since 2024, HKZ is the first offshore wind farm in Europe developed without direct government subsidies. The project contributes to industrial decarbonization while supplying fossil-free electricity to businesses and households. The project was enabled by a stable regulatory environment, Dutch government-backed grid connections, visibility on future market volumes and a tender process that reduced risk for private investors while allowing power to be sold into wholesale markets. HKZ also functions as a testbed for innovation and ecosystem enhancement. The research and development platform, SeaLab, convenes research institutes, universities and other stakeholders with the purpose of disseminating scientific knowledge on ecological initiatives and circular supply chain design. Working with De Rijke Noordzee, Vattenfall added elliptical openings to turbine foundations to allow water exchange and create shelter for marine species, installed artificial rock reefs on scour protection to increase habitat complexity and deployed a double bubble curtain to reduce construction noise while monitoring the impacts on marine mammals. This work embeds nature-inclusive design in the wind farm’s infrastructure and operations.Further pilots include using thermal cameras and AI to trigger temporary shutdowns during peak bird migration and working with North Sea farmers to test a floating seaweed farm between turbines to explore co-location of renewable energy with sustainable food production. Vattenfall is also trialling recyclable blades, developed by Siemens Gamesa, to reduce the lifecycle impact of offshore infrastructure. Results are still being assessed, with monitoring informing adaptive management.Early results from independent monitoring by The Rich North Sea indicate initial colonisation of turbine foundations by fish and invertebrates in the novel turbine structure. Monitoring of this site will inform continued adaptive management. HKZ shows that site-level regenerative measures are achievable at scale. Value CreatedThe benefit to Vattenfall is demonstrating that nature-inclusive design is commercially viable at gigawatt scale, which will only increase in relevance as future tenders increasingly weigh environmental performance alongside price. SeaLab also serves as long-term investment in enabling innovation: the AI bird-monitoring system, recyclable blade trial, and pilots for seaweed farms can be revisited and adapted for future projects. The benefit to society is the generation of fossil-free energy equivalent to more than 1.5 million households. The benefit to nature, summarised in the contributions to the Global Biodiversity Framework:Targets 2 and 11 (restoration and ecosystem services): water replenishment holes and artificial rock reefs increase habitat complexity and shelter within an actively used industrial marine site, the first time a turbine's own structure has been used this wayTarget 4 (species recovery / reducing human-wildlife conflict): noise mitigation during construction via a double bubble curtain and AI-triggered shutdowns during bird migration reduce direct disturbance to harbour porpoises and migratory seabirds.Target 8 (climate change mitigation): roughly 1.5 TWh of annual fossil-free electricity contributes to decarbonization at a scale relevant to Dutch energy targets. Why It Matters / Key TakeawaysHKZ provides evidence that nature-inclusive design is commercially viable at gigawatt scale when enabling policy and partnerships are in place. However, site measures alone will not deliver system-wide regeneration without supportive governance and cross-sector coordination. Scaling-up from project to system requires marine spatial planning, cross-sector coordination and policy signals that reward net-positive contribution, not just impact mitigation. Relevant global targetsGlobal Biodiversity Framework Targets 2 (restoration), 4 (species), 8 (climate mitigation), 11 (ecosystem services)ReferencesEuropean Environment Agency. Plastic production has grown to more than 460 million tonnes a year, expanding nearly 40% faster than the global economy, yet less than 9% is ultimately recycled. A new generation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools is changing what is possible across the plastics value chain, allowing materials to be identified, traced, analysed and redesigned down to the molecular level in ways not previously possible. This paper identifies four dimensions where AI has the greatest potential for transformation: design and materials, production and quality, collection and traceability, and recovery and value. Together, these capabilities could transform the economics of circular plastics while reducing pollution and emissions and improving human health outcomes, generating interconnected economic, social and environmental value – though technology remains only one of several levers needed, alongside infrastructure, policy, capital and consumer behaviour.Produced by the World Economic Forum's Plastics Technology and Innovation workstream within the Circular Economy Transformation Initiative, the paper draws on real-world case studies of AI deployment across the lifecycle to provide a preliminary, high-level view of where value could be created.

The UK government's approval of the Jackdaw North Sea gas field, despite widespread global criticism, undermines its climate credibility and international standing. The project, set to meet just 2% of UK gas demand for a decade, was re-approved following a quashed initial consent due to inadequate emissions accounting. This move contrasts with global trends toward fossil fuel phase-out and weakens the UK's position to oppose similar projects elsewhere. While the UK has historically led climate initiatives and enshrined net zero law, its support for new fossil fuel extraction risks setting a double standard. The decision comes amid growing global efforts to transition from fossil fuels, legal pressures, and the prospect of peak fossil fuel demand accelerating sooner than expected.
Jackdaw decision could haunt the UK at future climate summits
Generation Z across Europe faces overlapping crises including climate change, mental health challenges, academic and economic pressures, and housing insecurity. Adolescence, extending into the twenties, is marked by increased school demands, reduced family and peer support, intensified parental expectations, and amplified social comparison via social media. Economic concerns such as high living and education costs, and uncertain job prospects exacerbate stress. The visible climate crisis causes anxiety, compounded by a perceived lack of youth involvement in decision-making, fueling frustration and protests. Despite rising mental health issues linked to broader societal pressures, many young people remain engaged, expressing agency through activism and showing growing support for collective solutions like the EU.

Autumn and Halloween wreaths reflect a growing trend in "doorscaping," adding seasonal color and personality to front doors. This interest in decoration could encourage more front garden planting, helping counteract the widespread paving of British front gardens, which limits greenery and its environmental benefits. While practical concerns like parking and space exist, even small plantings—containers, bulbs, or climbers—can improve aesthetics, support wildlife, and aid cooling and flood control. Encouraging door decoration to extend into garden planting may enhance street appeal, biodiversity, and climate resilience.

Climate data visualizations simplify complex climate issues but often overlook local experiences and vulnerable communities, such as small Pacific islands like Tonga. While global visualizations accurately depict broad trends, they may lack localized data crucial for representing the lived realities of those most affected by climate change. Emotional responses to these visuals can drive awareness and discussion; however, meaningful climate action is more likely when individuals feel empowered to act at local or national levels. Effective climate communication must ensure diverse representation and foster both concern and agency, making visible not only the scale of the crisis but also the people behind the numbers.

Social unrest in China can inadvertently foster entrepreneurship due to local governments' responses rather than the protests themselves. When protests arise—often around environmental or social issues—authorities may initially use coercion but then concede by improving communication, shelving contentious projects, and loosening regulatory or financial barriers to restore public confidence. This sequence—street protest leading to government reaction, resource reallocation, and ultimately increased venture formation—creates unexpected economic opportunities. Empirical analysis from 2008 to 2019 shows protests correlate with thousands of new startups, driven by increased business lending and relaxed regulations, highlighting how political pressure can generate entrepreneurial opportunities indirectly.

By 2050, developing Asia will have 1.2 billion people aged 60 or older, with rising one-person households and social isolation increasing long-term care demand. Around 43% of older adults needing help do not receive it. Care extends beyond caregiver-recipient roles, emerging through mutual presence, shared routines, and everyday interactions—termed care-with. Social networks provide companionship, recognition, reciprocity, and support that formal care does not replace but complements. Strengthening aging care systems involves supporting these relational networks alongside formal services, fostering environments where social connections naturally develop to enhance older adults' well-being and inclusion.

The global climate system is complex. In order to unpack such complexity, the WMO Statement of the Climate uses seven Global Climate Indicators to describe the changing climate—providing a broad view of the climate at a global scale. They are used to monitor the domains most relevant to climate change, including the composition of the atmosphere, the energy changes that arise from the accumulation of greenhouse gases and other factors, as well as the responses of land, oceans and ice. The following site aims to provide an overview of the annually produced State of the Climate report for 2020.

At a GlancePartners: BASF, Allianz (co-owners); De Rijke Noordzee / The Rich North Sea; Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), Deltares, Waardenburg Ecology, Seaward, Wageningen Marine Research (nature-inclusive design and monitoring); Siemens Gamesa (recyclable blades); North Sea farmers (seaweed co-location pilot)Investment type: Company-funded by Vattenfall; enabled by a government-backed grid connection and competitive tender process, but developed without direct government subsidy.Key business benefit: Demonstrates that nature-inclusive design is commercially viable at gigawatt scale without subsidy, while SeaLab builds a reusable R&D platform that secures comprehensive knowledge for future projects.Key outcomes: 139 turbines, 1.5 GW installed capacity, ~1.5 TWh generated annually, powering more than 1.5 million households with fossil-free electricity since 2024; nature-inclusive design and construction of turbine foundations and blades; novel habitat creation on scour protection and within turbine foundations, as well as piloting co-use with seaweed cultivation. The OpportunityOffshore wind is a core growth sector in the ocean economy and must scale up rapidly to support decarbonization and energy security.
