Promoting sustainable growth while protecting natural heritage

## Challenges and Opportunities

Every year in Gabon, a significant portion of plastic waste is improperly disposed of, clogging drainage systems and contributing to urban flooding. In rural regions, plastics from packaging and agriculture are discarded improperly, polluting rivers and forests, which impacts local biodiversity and communities reliant on these ecosystems. This plastic waste also poses health risks, contaminating water sources and spreading disease. However, Gabon has an opportunity to turn the tide. Having demonstrated signification leadership in climate action, with its forests absorbing approximately 100 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, Gabon is well-positioned to tackle plastic pollution. Their membership in the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution highlights their commitment to global solutions. By improving waste management, raising public awareness, and prioritizing sustainable alternatives, Gabon can not only address plastic pollution but also reinforce its role as a global leader in environmental stewardship.

## Gabon joins the Global Plastic Action Partnership

The Global Plastic Action Partnership is excited to welcome Gabon into its national partnership network as its first country in Central Africa. Establishing the National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) is vital for protecting Gabon’s natural heritage, including mitigating the impact of plastic pollution on its coastal and marine environments, which are essential for sustaining livelihoods, fisheries, and ecotourism. This partnership marks a pivotal milestone in the country's efforts to combat plastic pollution and its environmental consequences. NPAP Gabon will empower the country to implement targeted, data-driven solutions tailored to its unique challenges, fostering collaboration among government entities, the private sector, civil society, and local communities to drive a transition to a circular economy for plastics.
