## Maharashtra State's Challenge

With USD 384 billion, Maharashtra is the largest state in India in terms of its economic standing. Mumbai is the financial capital of the State. Given the high economic growth rate, Maharashtra witnesses one of the highest consumption of plastics. The state has a total of 394 urban local bodies (ULBs), with Mumbai generating the highest plastic waste followed by Pune and Nashik. Furthermore, Maharashtra is also plagued with significantly high percentage of plastic waste in the water bodies. Marine plastic pollution is one of the severe challenges that state is working towards addressing. According to industry reports, the state’s percentage of plastics in beach debris is significantly higher (81 per cent) than the national average of 14 per cent. Authorities have also observed that the increasing problem of marine pollution has started impacting the livelihood of the local communities including the fishermen.

## Maharashtra Joins the Global Plastic Action Partnership

Maharashtra state, through its Ministry of Environment and Climate Change,  joined GPAP in May 2022 to advance regional efforts to fight plastic pollution.

# Journey Towards a Circular Plastic Economy: Maharashtra Plastic Action Roadmap

As one of India’s economic powerhouses, Maharashtra faces mounting environmental challenges from rapid economic and population growth, including a surge in plastic pollution. This intensifies issues such as greenhouse gas emissions, land and water contamination, air pollution, and harm to wildlife. This Plastic Action Roadmap highlights the urgent need for systemic improvements in plastic waste management and recommends strategic actions to advance plastics circularity in the state.
