## Challenges and Opportunities

With a substantial increase in daily waste generation, the Philippines is considered as one of the world's leading contributors to marine plastic pollution. Recognizing the urgency of this issue, the Philippine government has taken proactive steps to address the plastic pollution challenge. One such measure is the recent Expanded Producer Responsibility (EPR) Law, enacted in 2023, which reflects the country's commitment to integrating circular economy principles into its environmental strategies.


## Philippines National Plastic Action Partnership

In 2023, the Government of the Philippines, led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), officially joined the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP).Through this partnership, the Philippines takes a significant step toward tackling plastic pollution. The collaboration supports the creation of a National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP), a multi-stakeholder platform bringing together key changemakers from various sectors. This collective effort will accelerate the country's transition to a circular economy for plastics and create an evidence-based roadmap to guide policymaking.Joining GPAP not only strengthens the Philippines’ domestic efforts in plastic waste management but also enhances its leadership in combating plastic pollution across the ASEAN region.

### Philippines Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) Report

This report explores gender equity and social inclusion (GESI) in the Philippines' plastic value chain, showing how plastic pollution and gaps in waste management disproportionately affect marginalised groups. It highlights impacts on women involved in plastic processing, vending, farming, and fishing, as well as informal waste workers with limited safety measures and social protections, rural and coastal communities living in poverty with inadequate waste services, and artisanal fishers affected by aquatic plastic pollution.
