Transforming Plastics Ecosystems: Systemic Solutions For Impact
Despite this investment, there’s still a gap between Ghana’s aspirations and the financing that’s available. For Ghana to meet its SDG targets by 2030, estimates show that SDG expenditure should amount to $52 billion per year, resulting in a current SDG financing gap of $43 billion. The cumulative financing shortfall for circular economy-related SDGs is projected to amount to $193 billion by 2030, representing 44.7% of the anticipated total SDG gap

NPAP Ghana Financing Roadmap
The Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) has created this guidance to support actors in the plastics value chain and plastic pollution action community to adopt a gender-sensitive approach in their areas of work. The guidance provides several important principles for gender mainstreaming in this sector, along with detailed guidance on each principle, made specific to a variety of stakeholders, including policy-makers, industry and business leaders, innovators, civil society organizations and academia.

The Global Plastic Action Partnership Is Looking For Advisory & Consulting Services On Gender And Inclusion In Plastic Waste And Pollution Action
Reaching our goal requires us to improve measurement and reporting of plastic waste reduction initiatives. Partnership members across all task forces are taking a range of actions. We face two questions: How will we know whether these actions are working, and whether Indonesia is on track to meet the target?

NPAP Indonesia Metrics Roadmap Reduce Indonesia’s Marine Plastic Leakage 70% By 2025
Plastic pollution is a complex problem that requires concerted action by governments, the private sector, consumers, and civil society. This is particularly true with regard to financing, given the estimated $1.2 trillion and significant departure from the status quo necessary to implement sustainable solutions to transition to a circular economy for plastics. While addressing this problem will require broad-based mobilization of private and public capital globally, it is also crucial to consider how to best channel this capital to those who need it most –especially to informal actors who have little access to capital of any kind

Unlocking Investment for thePlastics Circular Economy:Considerations for Policymakers
To date, the majority of investment in this space is financing downstream activities in plastics waste management and recycling. This series of case studies demonstrate show capital from a variety of sources is influencing plastic material flows across the value chain, with an eye to increasing circularity. This portfolio includes mature examples, such as investments in rPET infrastructure in Mexico, which benefited from multiple rounds of financing, as well as venture-backed, early-stage innovations in reusable packaging and digital transactions for recyclable waste. Also included are high-potential analogous examples, such as the SUNREF program scaling renewable energy in Nigeria, and green bond issuances by the Indonesian government. As a key pillar of its work, the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) creates strategic tools and resources that facilitate investment in a circular economy for plastics. This work is an augmented version of our earlier set of case studies published in February 2022. It supports GPAP’s ongoing efforts to unlock financing, identify barriers to investment, and highlight emerging opportunities while delivering solutions in partnership with global and local stakeholders.astics

Unlocking the Plastics Circular Economy: Case Studies on Investment
Since production and consumption patterns are global, GPAP is also working with the Forum’s Future of Trade and Investment Platform to understand plastics value chains. Plastic and plastic waste flows, along with trade barriers that may hold back pollution reduction strategies, were identified through a community white paper issued by the World Economic Forum in July 2020. The report examines where trade policy could help stakeholders’ efforts to shift to cost-efficient, sustainable plastic alternatives and boost better end-of-life management including through recycling and circular approaches. The release was timely given implementation from January 2021 by parties to the Basel Convention – an international treaty designed to reduce the movements of hazardous and other types of waste between nations – of an amendment to include most types of plastic waste under controlled trade processes. The move adds further context to considerations around circular plastics strategies.

Ghana has been identified as the first African Regional Partner to the GPAP based on the bold initiatives that the country has taken to tackle the menace of plastic pollution. The Partnership has created Ghana’s National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) to support the development of a circular economy framework as the primary vehicle for reducing plastic waste and plastic pollution in Ghana. In that regard, the Ghana NPAP will act as the national platform for multi-stakeholder cooperation, facilitating initiatives and funding to scale and accelerate in-country partnerships that address plastic waste and pollution, while contributing to the nation’s progress towards achieving many of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

GPAP seeks to build out its work on one of its six impact areas, informing policy. This work seeks to identify opportunities to create an enabling environment in support of addressing plastic waste and pollution. Specifically, GPAP aims to develop and pilot a decision-making framework for key government stakeholders to understand which policy options and mechanisms are best suited to their needs. At present, the plethora of resources, tools, and guides available leads to lack of clarity. Furthermore, lessons learned from a given geography do not always translate into practical learnings in other contexts. The decision-making framework is intended to be reflective of the socioeconomic and environmental dimensions of plastic waste and pollution and applicable to a variety of contexts. It is envisioned to serve as an aggregated resource and key decision-making tool for use at the national level.

Request For Proposal For: A Decision-Making Framework For Policy Options Targeting Plastic Waste And Pollution
To achieve the goal of a safe climate, we will need to both dramatically reduce emissions to achieve absolute zero greenhouse gases and simultaneously start reducing the stock of pollutants already in the atmosphere – which would otherwise remain there for thousands of years. This publication focuses on the 10–20 billion tons of CO2 removals needed every year if we are to keep warming below Paris Agreement thresholds.

A Roadmap For Radical Reduction Of Plastic Pollution In Ghana
Encouraging behaviour that directly contribute to preventing plastic waste requires efforts from actors across the entire plastic value chain: individuals, families, communities, businesses, innovators and the public sector that all directly contribute to preventing plastic waste and improving how waste is managed and recovered. All actors should work together to reduce the amount of plastic that is produced, purchased and consumed, and change the way plastic is managed and disposed of.

Primary data collection in the form of online and in-person qualitative interviews, focus group discussions, and website profiling of companies were conducted. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, five regions in Ghana representing mega and medium cities were selected for the fieldwork. A sample size of 176 people made up of 88 males and 88 females in 32 institutions (formal/informal/government) and 10 communities were engaged for the analysis. A hybrid gender framework was developed for this analysis. The Harvard framework and the Social Relations Approach were used. Roles, responsibilities, time use, access to and control over resources and decision making were assessed in relation to key institutions along the value chain such as the state, market, community and family. Women’s participation in these institutions were categorised as regulators (policy-makers), market actors (business owners), workers, end-users (consumers) and community members.

Financing System Change To Radically Reduce Plastic Pollution In Indonesia: A Financing Roadmap Developed By The Indonesia National Plastic Action Partnership
Since our founding in late 2018, we have come to identify a critical knowledge gap globally in how gender equality and intersectional considerations can and must be mainstreamed across the plastics value chain (from material design to consumption to recycling and waste management), as well as being integrated into programmes and strategies to tackle plastic waste and plastic pollution. To address this, we have developed this gender-responsive strategy to plastic pollution action articulated, in the hope that it will not only inform our work but also that of other stakeholders in the global plastics ecosystem.
