Viet Nam generates over 3.7 million tons of plastic waste each year, of which only 10 to 15 percent is currently collected for recycling.

2020

Official launch of the Viet Nam NPAP.

The 2020 ASEAN chair, Viet Nam is committed to leading the way for the broader South-East Asia region in developing and implementing meaningful policies to address plastic waste and pollution. Under the National Action Plan on Marine Plastic Debris Management, the country has pledged to reduce the flow of plastics into the ocean by 75% by 2030, and to boost the sustainable growth of its marine economy.

On 23 December 2020, GPAP partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE) of Viet Nam and WWF-Viet Nam to officially launch a national collaboration platform for plastic pollution action.

2022

Since August 2022, UNDP Viet Nam has hosted the NPAP Viet Nam Secretariat.

National Targets

By 2030, Viet Nam aims to reduce marine plastics by 75% and to collect 100% of abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear.

The nation will eliminate single-use plastics and non-biodegradable plastic bags from coastal tourist attractions and ensure that marine protected areas are completely free of plastic waste by 2030.

The Viet Nam NPAP has published the varied reports identifying key system change interventions to support the government’s targets to reduce plastic litter in oceans by 75% by 2030, as outlined in the National Program for Strengthening Plastic Waste Management and the National Action Plan for Management of Marine Plastic Litter by 2030.                        

Community

The Viet Nam NPAP convenes leading stakeholders and influencers, including policymakers, industry executives, investors, and civil society leaders to drive the implementation of public-private actions to shape a more sustainable plastic circular economy. The Viet Nam NPAP is chaired by the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE).

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         

Investment

The Viet Nam NPAP directs global and local investments from GPAP partners to high impact initiatives to reduce plastic waste pollution. It will act as a platform for incountry plastic-related initiatives, from SMEs to large infrastructure projects, to coordinate investment and resources to drive the waste management, material design and innovation needs identified.

                                                                          

Viet Nam National Action Roadmap

The Viet Nam Plastic Action Assessment and Roadmap Considerations, supports the government’s targets to reduce plastic litter in oceans by 50% by 2025 and by 75% by 2030, as outlined in the National Program for Strengthening Plastic Waste Management and the National Action Plan for Management of Marine Plastic Litter by 2030, as well as contributing to the nation’s progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

Gender Context Assessment of the Plastic Value Chain in Viet Nam

The intersectional gender context assessment report on the plastic value chain in Viet Nam is an initiative under the framework of the NPAP Viet Nam. 

Its aim is to highlight the gender and inclusion gaps and inequalities that exist throughout the plastic value chain, which can inform the development of gender-responsive and inclusive policy options for addressing plastic waste pollution in Viet Nam.
