The Ecuador's National Action Roadmap evaluates the country's plastic ecosystem, focusing on plastic waste generation, management, and environmental leakage. It also projects future scenarios up to 2040: a business-as-usual scenario, which predicts continued growth in plastic pollution, and a system-change scenario, which envisions comprehensive and ambitious interventions across the entire plastics value chain. The latter scenario leverages synergies between upstream and downstream measures to enhance the circularity of Ecuador's plastic system, significantly reducing plastic pollution. The roadmap presents concrete actions to reduce plastic waste and improve plastic management in Ecuador, promoting circularity and a just transition considering social, economic, and environmental aspects. Developed with input from diverse stakeholders, including government, industry, recyclers, academia, and civil society, the report serves as a map for stakeholders to work towards a common goal with full transparency on what contributions are needed. Led by a team of experts, it was officially presented at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in October 2023 and was launched on June 10, 2024.

Gender intersects with a range of social markers to produce and sustain specific inequalities for different actors along the plastic value chain. To address the multifaceted challenges posed by plastic pollution, including its gendered impacts, the Ghana National Plastic Action Partnership (GH-NPAP) undertook a Gender Analysis of the Plastics and Plastic Waste Sectors in Ghana in May 2021. The analysis uncovered significant roles played by men and women across various sectors of the plastic industry. However, notable data gaps persisted regarding the intersectional and inclusive social context of the informal plastics and plastics waste sectors. To address these disparities, the GH-NPAP with support from Global Affairs Canada conducted this Intersectional and Inclusive Social Context Assessment aimed at gaining a comprehensive understanding of the inequalities and marginalization faced by various groups within Ghana’s informal plastic value chain. This study underscored the pervasive challenges of marginalization, recognition, and sexual and gender-based violence faced by waste pickers, particularly among youth and women. In response, actionable recommendations are provided to address these issues to enhance the well-being and empowerment of informal waste sector actors in Ghana.

Plastic pollution represents a critical global challenge. The advent of plastics has revolutionized countless aspects of daily life, from food packaging to consumer electronics, due to their versatility, convenience, and cost-effectiveness. This has led to a significant surge in plastic production and consumption worldwide. Notably, India ranks as the second-largest producer of plastic polymers globally. The sheer scale and complexity of the plastic industry pose substantial management challenges. In 2022, India generated an estimated 4.13 million tonnes of plastic waste, with the annual per capita waste generation increasing from 1.2 kg in 2016-17 to 3 kg in 2020-21. Maharashtra, the leading state in plastic waste production in India, contributed 311,254 tonnes in the 2020-21 period alone, with Mumbai, its capital, accounting for a third of this output. To address these issues, the Maharashtra Plastic Action Partnership (M-PAP) launches this Social Context Assessment Report for the plastic waste sector in the region. This report aims to pinpoint obstacles that hinder the social integration of informal waste pickers into the plastic economy and to formulate actionable recommendations that facilitate a shift towards a more inclusive plastic economy.

Rapid economic progress in Viet Nam has been accompanied by a huge increase in consumption and, as a result, waste – particularly plastic waste. It is estimated that Viet Nam’s post-consumer plastic waste will rise by 36% from 2018 levels by the year 2030. Despite major commitments from the government, business and civil society, plastic waste leakage into the country’s water bodies is expected to increase by 106% between 2018 and 2030, to 373,000 tonnes per year. The intersectional gender context assessment report on the plastic value chain in Viet Nam is an initiative under the framework of the NPAP Viet Nam. Its aim is to highlight the gender and inclusion gaps and inequalities that exist throughout the plastic value chain, which can inform the development of gender-responsive and inclusive policy options for addressing plastic waste pollution in Viet Nam.

Hoja de Ruta de Acción Para Reducir la Contaminación Plástica en la Ciudad de México:Resumen Ejecutivo
The Global Plastic Action Partnership is built on three strategic pillars with the following aims – to convene stakeholders and curate conversations; to create insights and deliver action roadmaps; and to catalyze strategic financing to promote the transition to a circular economy for plastics. GPAP is in the process of convening a Global Task Force on Finance to drive forward the third pillar. The Global Task Force will pull together the right champions and thought partners as GPAP looks to deepen stakeholders’ understanding of the current situation regarding investments into efforts to adopt the circular economy and address plastic waste and pollution. Ultimately, GPAP Financing Task Force will seek to (1) identify the barriers to investments in the circular economy and to (2) articulate an approach to remove those barriers and incentivize financial engagement in the transition to a circular economy for plastics.

Biodiversity is declining faster than at any time in human history, threatening the ecosystem services on which our lives and livelihoods depend. The Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) aims to reverse this decline, with the provision of a strategic vision and a global roadmap for the conservation, protection and sustainable management of biodiversity and ecosystems through 2030.More than half of the world’s economy is highly or moderately dependent on nature, has a critical and irreplaceable role to play in delivering the innovation, investment and business models that will be needed to achieve the goals of the GBF, which aims to galvanize urgent and transformative action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.The white paper provides context and potential implications for 10 of the draft GBF’s 22 proposed action targets that are most likely to result in changes to business strategies or operations across multiple sectors, and presents case studies of companies that are already taking action to mitigate nature-related risks in their operations, while investing in new business opportunities that contribute positively to the targets of the GBF.The paper also covers six emerging approaches that will need to be scaled up to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, driven by proactive companies and financial institutions, as well as by regulators and other stakeholders.
